Interventional cardiology is a constantly changing discipline. The rapid introduction of new and complex techniques makes training a critical part of an interventional cardiologist’s life.
As a result, the American College of Cardiology requested that Moceri Management develop a training program for physicians and fellows attending i2 Summit 2007: Innovation in Intervention that would advocate quality cardiovascular care through education in a hands-on environment.
The challenge was to create a simulation hub that would provide a structured training environment for fellows while allowing physicians the flexibility to test their skills or learn new techniques as time permitted.
Moceri Management selected Mentice, Simbionix, and Medical Simulation Corporation (MSC) as our simulation providers due to their leading-edge technology. A total of eleven simulators were placed in three adjacent rooms to meet attendee demand.
The simulation training was integrated into the i2 Summit Fellows “Boot Camp” program held at the annual meeting. A faculty member was assigned to each of the simulation rooms. This expert interventional cardiologist probed fellows on the choices they were making in real time and provided insights into real world examples augmenting the educational benefit of the simulators.
A centralized registration booth allowed physicians the ability to select the time and procedure that best suited their needs. Scheduling cards were provided for immediate, future access to ensure physicians used their limited educational time most efficiently.
Moceri Management made every effort to ensure that the simulation hub was unbiased and educationally focused. Time slots and simulation programs were assigned based on content, not on the sponsoring company.
