This program is designed to meet the educational needs of interventional cardiologists and general cardiologists with an interest in interventional cardiology.

 

Statement of Need

The purpose of this activity is to outline the most advanced interventional cardiology procedures, techniques and devices that have been developed to improve patient outcomes. For the last 30 years, the field of interventional cardiology has grown into a discipline that addresses multiple areas of cardiac therapeutics. These range from revascularization strategies for coronary artery disease, to structural heart disease repair devices, and left ventricular assist strategies including percutaneous left ventricular support devices. A continuous stream of emerging therapeutics is expected to enter the interventionalist’s armamentarium. Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to apply this knowledge to better diagnose, treat and manage this patient population.

Learning Objectives

The purpose of this activity is to present physicians with a comprehensive review of the latest interventional procedures and recent research results providing updates on leading techniques within the field. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the contemporary issues of direct thrombin inhibitors and anti-platelet therapy
  • Identify the safety issues of drug eluting stents (DES)
  • Recount major and minor complications that can arise in the catherization laboratory
  • Review the most advanced treatment options for left main and complex high risk lesions
  • Describe new treatments for chronic total occlusions
  • Name the most current updates regarding percutaneous valve repair/replacement
